YouTube Changes You

I have a very important message I am going to discuss about our YouTube channel.

http://www.YouTube.com/ErikTV365 <– Check it out here if you haven’t already!

We may be changing some stuff up in 2018, some of you may not like it.

I have put my all into trying to build our channel into something I am proud of (trying to gain that 100k play button along the way); however, my dedication has wavered and I am very unhappy with that. I have let too many issues that I have no control over affect me.

Over the years, I have tried to follow the YouTube guides and strategies, the trends that were popular at the time along with searching for upcoming trends AND the ever changing algorithms that YouTube forces on us while trying to stay as real to our family as possible.

We are what you see. A family that loves one another & pushes one another to be the best people we can be. There is no ‘fakeness’ about us or our passions in life. We have been an open book on this entire journey and will continue to be.

I have thought about going back to daily and getting back to our original roots of the channel, maybe even pumping the brakes by going down to less than 3 videos per week or even completely taking time off away from YouTube all together.

I have not even had these discussions with Amy to this point (the point of me physically typing this out). I know she will stand by whatever decision I make on this subject and only wants what is best for our family. She see’s the positives and the negatives of this journey we have been on.

In reality, I have no clue what will become of our channel moving forward. I only know that I am not where I envisioned myself or my channel being at this point.

In the beginning, it was all about creating memories in case my cancer came back, then it branched out to an income source which we have grown accustomed to having in our bank account each month and then it grew into something I wanted so bad that I would do anything for; I wanted to be a FULL TIME YouTuber.

All of this happened over the course of 6 or 7 years. YouTube allowed us to dream about something that I would have never dreamed would happen in my lifetime… working as a content creator from home on the internet. Making money from just being a happy family and making daily home movies.

Then, 2017 rolled in and all of the different controversies due to ads and the actions of creators shutdown those dreams. In the middle of the year, we were over 700k views per month and 2k subs all while doing the same thing we have done over the entire life of our YouTube channel. I saw all of the hard work and time being put in paying off. We were trending upwards!

ADPOCALYPSE hit!

Fast forward six months, I have watched our channel come to a stand still and even regress which makes me sad. Our views trickle in, our subs go negative on days… Please don’t take this the wrong way. I am literally struggling to find happiness in being a YouTube creator. It is so hard to be a YouTuber and I admire everyone that can sustain a spot at the top.

I work 45-50 hr per week at my FT job (which is our main source of income); commute an hour to an hour and a half through Houston traffic each way for that job; deal with depression AND spend and hour to an hour and a half editing videos each day which leaves me running on empty way too often. All of that doesn’t even include family time or me time.

FYI, this is not meant to be a “pity party” nor a “soap box” episode… just me being honest and talking with you. I have always done my best to include you all in my life.

We are one of the original 20 or so “Family Vloggers” on YouTube and yet have never really broken through in that niche. We were daily for well over 2k days in a row! I have dedicated a large portion of my life to this channel and been blessed to capture so many memories along the way. Birthdays, Holidays, Firsts, Events and so much more…

I am very thankful for those of you that have been dedicated to our family along the way. I hope that this post does not deter you from continuing to be dedicated to our channel in the future.

You all are the BEST!

I am thankful for all of the help and encouragement we have received from fellow YouTubers such as @Clintus, @ShayCarl, @LaneVids,@CharlesTrippy, @CarlAndJinger, Tim & Jenn, Tim Schmoyer, @JeromeASF and so many more professional YouTube creators. I have always been open to the suggestions or even criticisms of our content by fellow creators that have come to us constructively. I have changed with those suggestions during our time here on YouTube to try and make our channel more appealing to a larger audience or to better approach the editing of our videos.

Life moves forward no matter who you are and you either choose to move forward with it or stay stuck in an infinite loop of failure. Success ALWAYS comes from FAILURE. I am tired of failing myself and am ready to move FORWARD.

Here is my current thought process…

I am an individual who runs (‘runs’, meaning shoot, edit, upload, communicate) 3 main YouTube channels and a fourth sometime this next year. I already stated my other commitments in life up above…

How can I maintain my mental health along with my dreams of being successful in YouTube all while moving forward? This is a hard question to answer.

  • Cutting back on ErikTV365 vlogs that are uneventful or just filler content would be a very likely scenario.
  • No set schedule but consistent uploads on a weekly basis, so a day or two may be missing when there is nothing going on which would eliminate filler vlogs.
  • Live streams here and there to keep everyone involved.
  • Baseball content and events are always included.
  • Dedicate more time to helping the other 2 channels get off the ground.
  • Stop trying to change the opinions of the people that will never change their opinion of me.
  • Be happy with just being…

Let me wrap this up by saying this is not the end of ErikTV365 or our family vlogs, just merely another attempt by me to try and figure out this thing called YouTube.

  • Very well said, Erik. I wish I knew the answers to all of this, but I know you will find your way and will always do what you think is best for you and your family. <3 Keep being you, because you are more than enough.

  • We always enjoy watching your videos! Since we don’t see y’all too often anymore ( 🙁 ) helps keep us up to speed of what’s going on with you guys! We love y’all and I think you do a FANTASTIC job at this YouTube business. It’s way more than I could even take on and especially for the amount of time you do, and have, put into it. Keep it going! I hope things pick back up soon.

  • Erik,
Y’all are my favorite YouTubers, I have full supported y’all from day 1 and will keep supporting y’all.
I feel you need to do what’s best for your family, if y’all decide to cut down on vlogs by uploading once a week I will SUPPORT Y’ALL! I say keep being you and do what’s best for your family! Your family comes first !
Like I said y’all have had my support from day 1 and I will keep SUPPORTING y’all no matter what you decide.

    • Thank you so much Caitlin! I am leaning towards cutting back as I stated here in the blog and the vlog that will release today. I am also thinking of doing more writing here on the blog to keep me focused and in tune with my thoughts.

  • Gonna miss you guys,,but you do what’s best for yall….whether 3 days a week or just one day a week,,,,I will still be watching…love you guys!! 💜💗 aka: Country girl,,my youtube!!

  • First of all, thank you for adding me to the list of people who have helped you along the way. You have done the same for me.

I am in the same boat as you, and I realized that sometimes change is good. That is why I’ve cut down on my vlogging, and focused more on other efforts, like my Dad Reviews channel.

YouTube is always changing, sometimes it can hurt you and sometimes it can help you, but you never know until that time comes. Which is what sucks about the platform.

Just need to find new ways to innovate for yourself and keep your audience strong!
